Bites & Stings

This category will cover a wide range of creepy crawlers and flying insects. Insect bites and stings are very common in children, especially during the spring and summer months. The usual suspects include spiders, ticks, mosquitoes, ants, bees, yellow jackets and wasps. While most insect bites only result in little more than an annoying itching or stinging sensation and mild swelling, they can cause more serious conditions, such as severe allergic reactions or infection.

Most spiders found in the United States are harmless, with the exception of the black widow and the brown recluse spider. These two types of spiders will be discussed in detail. There are many species of snakes in our country, some poisonous, some not; we will focus on the three most important poisonous snakes: the rattlesnake, the cottonmouth and the copperhead.

The discussions will focus on the signs and symptoms of the particular insect sting or animal bite, what you should do for your child if a bite or sting occurs, and most importantly, some clues on how to prevent such injuries.
