Bones, Bruises, & Cuts

If you have children like myself, you know that bumps and bruises are a common occurrence and come with the territory.

Fortunately, most injuries in children are minor and have no long-lasting health effects. However, serious injuries due occur, and in many cases can be prevented.

Infants and young children are at greater risk for many injuries. This increased risk may be due to many factors. Children are curious and like to explore their environment. This characteristic may lead children to play with matches or venture into the family pool.

Young children have limited physical coordination and cognitive abilities. This factor can lead to a greater risk for falls from bicycles and playground equipment and make it difficult for them to escape from a fire. And their small size and developing bones and muscles may make them more susceptible to injury in car crashes if they are not properly restrained.

A few facts about injuries in children:

  1. Motor vehicle injuries are the greatest public health problem facing children today. For children ages 1 to 14, motor vehicle injuries are the leading cause of death in the United States (US).
  2. Drowning is the second leading cause of injury-related death among children 1 to 14.
  3. Each year in the US, emergency departments treat more than 200,000 children ages 14 and younger for playground-related injuries.
  4. An estimated 140,000 children are treated each year in emergency departments for traumatic brain injuries sustained while bicycling.

This category of the website will focus on many different childhood injuries or conditions, including fractures, sprains, head injuries and most importantly, injury prevention.
